Gene drive can result from multiple mechanisms. In this infographic published by the Entomological Society of America a mechanism is shown involving the cleavage of the yellow gene/chromosome (indicated by the scissors) resulting in a blue gene/chromosome. There are other mechanisms that are quite distinct from what is represented here, but which result in a similar skewing of the expected inheritance pattern (drive).
