The image describes organizational elements and hierarchy within the United Nations system to situate the activities undertaken for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, effective Dec 1993) and its supplementary treaty the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the CBD (effective Sept 2003). It also outlines the two yearly cycle of events and workflow via meetings such as the COP (Conference of the Parties) and MOP (Meeting of the Parties) organized by the CBD Secretariat to support representatives of Parties, non-Parties, non-governmental organizations and other associated organizations, and observers to discuss past work and establish future areas/programs of work related to the implementation of the treaties. Following the COP and during the intersessional period various ad hoc technical expert groups (AHTEGs) could be convened and tasked to produce documents related to the plan of work agreed at the COP or MOP. These documents and other reports would be discussed by Party representatives forming the SBSTTA (Subsidiary Body on Science, Technical, and Technological Advice) and form the basis of draft decisions that would form the basis for negotiations at the next COP. The SBSTTA typically meets in the year that the COP is held.
